Blog #8

Through the reading provided by “They Say I Say”, I was able to better curate and add quotes throughout my essay. One thing my essay heavily lacked were quotes, I was unsure of where or how to add them into my writing. I believe the additions of quotes into my writing enriches and strengthens my writing as a whole. Currently, I need to cite my sources. However, three quotes added into or improved upon in my writing are:

Quote 1:

In Rhys Southan’s essay, he discusses how Effective Altruists believe that art is a waste of one’s time. For example, Peter Singer claims, “Any break we take from working to reduce suffering throughout the world is like having a leisurely nap beside a lake where thousands of children are screaming for our help” (Southan).

Quote 2:

Art’s ability to draw the emotions out of an individual greatly improves mental health. For instance, “Art can help a person reach into largely unconscious parts of the mind and experience dimensions of self otherwise buried and voiceless” (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-friedman-lmsw/art-mental-health_b_1562010.html).  Which ultimately helps an individual acknowledge and deal with repressed emotions.

Quote 3:

An example of said phenomenon is when Benjamin Zander, a  “… conductor for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, which he [had] founded in 1979”, (https://www.npr.org/2017/11/10/562884481/benjamin-zander-how-does-music-transform-us) , explained a story about a kid from the streets in Ireland.
