Blog #14

Throughout my essay I plan to use Linguistic, Visual, and Audio. I hope to use these modes to prove to the reader that art improves a person’s character. In this essay I hope to use:

“La Bella Vita” by John Armstrong

The Video “What is Art For?”

As well as a TED talk by Melissa Walker

Olivia Gagne’s Project

Essay Outline:

Art Rebalances us- I hope to discuss the beneficial factors of art therapy and how art can help a person suffering from mental illnesses  such as, PTSD. In this portion not only can I refer to the “What is Art For?” video, but also the TED talk by Melissa Walker and how she used art therapy to help veterans overcome their PTSD.

  • Tie into Art makes us feel less lonely – art therapy helps individuals feel more so connected to others

Art Helps us Appreciate Stuff- Here I hope to use Liv’s example of how although patients at hospitals are going through some very difficult as well as traumatic experiences the art which fills the hospitals allow the patients a bit of piece. Through the art, the patients are able to still appreciate little things around them and even possibly through their experiences and the art they are able to appreciate these things, what prior seemed insignificant, more so. Here I can also discuss Schiller, and discuss how and why we find things beautiful, and how this can translate into our daily lives. How this ultimately allows us to appreciate the little things in life.

Art is Propaganda For What Really Matters- art is used “… to stand up for the best sides of human nature” (“What is Art For?”). Art sends a message, this message can be to broaden one’s horizons, to motivate/energize one for a cause, or even just to provoke an emotion which is beneficial for oneself. Art provides a platform for artists, and enables artists to display their message. Art allows support and encouragement from the community, and as a result can increase community involvement. This results in art making one feel less lonely, be more appreciative for what they have, and keeps the community hopeful that not only they will better themselves, but also the people around them.

Points/Arguments:

  • Art brings the community together
    • Art improves people’s character
    • Art rebalances us
    • Art is a platform
    • Art helps us appreciate the little things in life
    • Art is beautiful, and can be anything you want it to be
    • Art helps us get through the hard times
    • Art can not only improve one’s character, but also one’s mental state

  1. You seems to already have a strong thesis which is a great start. I think how specific your thesis is will really help you write and argue your point. I think my drawing in from another Ted Talk as well as our peer’s project, you will have plenty of evidence to draw from. Furthermore you have a very thorough outline which is a great place to start. Make sure to include one more mode of communication, most likely special, because I believe we needed four in total. Also as your write make sure to include you personal experience with beauty. You outline is great, but it appears to be missing your connection with beauty, weave this in throughout your essay to support your claims. Overall I really enjoy your topic and think that specifically using PTSD as an example is a great choice!

  2. I think you have a lot of profound, well-built ideas that are easily transformable into an essay. I especially think you have potential in your list of arguments, including how art re-balances you. Those supporting points are specific enough to allow you and your writing to shine through, while also leaving enough room for the actual essay to speak on your behalf. Your sources are also well crafted, with each of them filling a specific need in your paper-Olivia’s project about art in hospitals as a reminder of how valuable art is, even in tragic situations, Schiller’s essay for a classical take, and especially the video “What is art for”, for a succinct analysis of the history of art in our culture. Overall, very well done. If I had to suggest anything, I would encourage you to look more broadly at beauty as opposed to just art. As you know, beauty encompasses a lot of things-nature, luxury goods, pleasure-that art alone is not just not able to describe.
