From this interview, I was able to gain insight into some difficulties one may face as being a leader in the career of nursing. For instance, as a leader amongst your peers one may face opposition, that one may not agree with the opinion/decision of those who hold higher authority, and that one may become frustrated with decisions out of your control. I believe this nurse had exceptional self-awareness and management in times of conflict this nurse maintains a calm presence. They weigh the rights of everyone involved while following protocols. The nurse in times of adversity demonstrates the importance of maintaining respect for everyone involved (the patient and healthcare team). I had learned from this nurse about an ethical dilemma in which she experienced as a new graduate, during her patient’s stay at the hospital the patient had discovered she was pregnant. The woman had then asked this nurse to help facilitate her in the process of abortion. The nurse informed the patient that she must ask her provider as this was out of the nurse’s scope of practice. From this nurse, I had gained insight into the ability to advocate for a patient/stand for what you believe in while maintaining respect for others. How to maintain grace and class in times of adversity. While venturing out into this career I will carry with me the importance of providing a calm and respectful presence in all settings, especially in times of adversity. Additionally, in times of ethical dilemmas remember that there is a healthcare team to assist in the navigation of this dilemma.
From my own experiences with this nurse, I can confidently state that they demonstrate compassion, respect, and a calm presence during times of high stress. Having the privilege of knowing this nurse and having the ability to interview them, I feel as though I gained valuable information prior to the transition from nursing student to nurse. I have acknowledged the ideology that during this transition I may experience difficulty recognizing that there are members of the healthcare team to assist me. In times of adversity, collaboration is essential, for support and problem-solving.
